Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and the Politics of Toughness

Last week, GOP presidential candidates and fellow freshman senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz squabbled over immigration. Now, in the wake of Paris being attacked by a murderous gang of Islamist terrorists, they're fighting over foreign policy. Rubio is much more of a "neoconservative," at least in the foreign policy sense, than Cruz , and the Texas senator is subtly attacking him for it.

Clinton wobbled on foreign policy in debate

Hillary Clinton came to Saturday’s debate eager to showcase her confident command of foreign policy and to deliver a former secretary of state’s master class on world affairs — a day after the massacres in Paris reminded voters that the race to be president is also a contest to be commander in chief. --Instead, she essentially ducked tough questions about the lack of a postwar plan for Libya and whether the administration underestimated the so-called Islamic State.

Marco Rubio, Scott Walker Trade Shots on Foreign Policy in Iowa

Presidential hopefuls Marco Rubio and Scott Walker exchanged fire over foreign policy in Iowa on Saturday, hours before the two are scheduled to appear together at a Faith and Freedom Coalition summit outside of Des Moines. ✧ Speaking to The Des Moines Register editorial board on Saturday morning, Rubio said his seat on the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees lends him a distinct advantage on “the most crucial obligation the president faces, as commander in chief.” ✧ “Governors can certainly read about foreign policy, and take meetings and briefings with experts,” the Florida Republican said, “but there’s no way they’ll be ready on Day One to manage U.S. foreign policy.”

NBC’s Mitchell: Clinton Avoided Foreign Policy in Launch Because of Her ‘Missteps’

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reviewed Hillary Clinton‘s 2016 kickoff yesterday. Calling into her own MSNBC show today, guest-hosted by Luke Russert, Mitchell said Clinton’s going to have to start defining who she is and what she stands for.

Clinton’s introductory video focused around American families and domestic policy, and did not exactly touch on foreign policy. The reason for this, Mitchell said, is because there were “a lot of missteps there” in the Obama administration while she was Secretary of State. Mitchell cited the rise of ISIS, the toppling of Middle Eastern leaders not working out, several failed states, and the controversy over the Iran nuclear negotiations. She said there isn’t a whole lot to look at.”
